Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Susanna Maria Noel, Mrs Thomas Hill (d.1760) by Arthur Pond (London 1701 – Rome 1758), circa 1755. A painted oval half-length portrait of the wife of Thomas Harwood (1693-1782), who assumed the name of Hill, whom she married in 1740, almost in profile to the left. Her hair drawn back from her forehead, wearing a white satin bodice with pearl earrings, necklace and stomacher. The attribution and identification are based on a letter to the artist from Thomas Hill written in 1755. Their four children were: Susanna Hill (1743-1761); Maria Hill (1742-1813; who married Sir Brian Broughton-Delves (d.1766) and Henry Errington; Samuel Hill (1743-1766) and Noel Hill, 1st Baron Berwick (1745-1789) and the builder of Attingham who married in 1768 Anne Vernon (1744-1797).
Provenance
Attingham collection; bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
