Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Thomas Harwood the elder (1661-1738) by Richard van Bleeck (The Hague 1670 – London c.1733), signed and dated, middle right: RVBleeck f.1737, inscribed top left: THOS HARWOOD ESQR / of TERNE. A half-length portrait of Thomas Harwood, grandfather of the 1st Lord Berwick, as an elderly man, turned to right, wearing a blue coat and a wig. Thomas Hill was a Shrewsbury merchant (a draper) who married Margaret Hill. Their son Thomas, who took the name of Hill, was father of the 1st Lord Berwick.
Provenance
In 1847 inventory; bequeathed to the National Trust in 1947 with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
