Oil painting on panel, Thomas Phelips (c.1500-1589/90), British (English) School, 1560. Inscribed 'Thos. Phelips 1560'. Father of the builder of Montacute. Son of Richard Phelips of Charlborough and Emeline...married (1534) Elizabeth Smythe of Bristol.1533. Portrait of a middle-aged man, half-length, turned slightly to the left, gazing at spectator, short dark brown hair, pale brown drooped moustache and pointed beard, pale complexion, cart-wheel ruff, black silk tunic with black buttons. Dark background.
