Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Hon. Henry Gorges (1658/9- 1674), manner of Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680), inscribed Lord Gorge 1660. A portrait of a young boy as a hunter, full-length, striding to the left, left foot forward gazing at the spectator, dressed in a pink silk 'classical' robe, short sleeves rolled back to reveal white undershirt, open at the thigh showing foot with 'classical' sandal; a grey silk sash worn on his right shoulder which flows behind him and holds a quiver of arrows on his back, in his right hand he holds a bow and his left hand caresses the head of a spaniel who looks up at him; blond hair, parted in the centre depicted as a hunter with spaniel who is walking at his side; woodland setting with distant landscape to the left. Great-grandson of Sir Thomas Gorges (1526-1610), Groom of the Bedchamber to Queen Elizabeth and keeper of the robes, MP for Downton, Wilts. and Ambassador to Sweden in 1582. Great-nephew of Bridget Gorges, wife of Sir Robert Phelips.

Previously property of Mrs Claudie Phelips; arrived at Montacue house October 1996 and was purchased by the National Trust in 1997
