Summary
Oil painting on canvas, John Phelips (1644-1701), British (English) School, circa 1680-90. Portrait of the son of Colonel Edward Phelips ((c.1613-80) and Anne Pye (d.c.1698-1700) as a mature man, double-chin, half length, standing in armour, turned to the left, gazing at spectator, his left hand on his hip his right arm resting on a plinth on which sits his helmet; grey natural shoulder-length hair, wearing full armour, with a white lace cravat; elaborate red sword belt with sword with gilded sword hilt worn on his left hip, view of sky to the left. He married Alice Molyeux daughter of Adam Molyneux of Ballymulvey, Co.Longford. He second son of Colonel Edward Phelips, of Kilpatrick, Co. Cork and London, the brother of Sir Edward Phelips III (1638-1699) and father of Edward Phelips IV (1678-1734).
Provenance
On loan from the Phelips family since 1931; purchased with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the V&A Museums and Galleries Commission Purchase Grant Fund in 1989.
