Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Young Woman, manner of George Knapton (London 1698 – Kensington 1778), mid-18th century. A painted oval portrait of a young woman, pale complexion, half length facing, gazing at spectator, head slightly inclined to the left, dark brown curly hair, in a blue cocked hat with ostrich feathers, pale brown surcoat cross-tied in front with blue ribbons, sleeve caught up with a pearl pin, lace frills on collar and sleeves, blue cloak draped over her arms.
Provenance
Bought and bequeathed by Sir Percy Malcolm Stewart (1871-1951) to the National Trust and transferred to Montacute House, after the death of Lady Stewart, 1960. Stolen, 1961 and recovered, 1971
