Summary
Oil painting on canvas, William Robert Phelips (1846 - 1919) possibly by Percy W. I. Buckman (Dorset 1865 - 1935), labelled: "The Last Squire to Reside at Montacute", circa 1910. A portrait of an elderly man, half-length, seated to left, gazing at spectator. He has grey hair a grey moustache and his left arm is resting on the arm of his chair, his right hand is on his lap. He is wearing a brown suit, white shirt and red tie with a glimpse of his waistcoat at top of buttoned-up jacket. Son of William Phelips and Ellen Helyar; married, firstly Cecily Fane and, secondly, Constance Louisa Ponsonby-Fane. Companion picture to NT 597938.
Provenance
On loan from the Phelips family since 1931; purchased with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the V&A Museums and Galleries Commission Purchase Grant Fund in 1989.
