Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Elizabeth Phelips, Mrs Edward Phelips IV (1689-1750), attributed to Bartholomew Dandridge (1691– c.1754), inscribed with sitters name and dated 1730. A painted oval portrait a young woman, double-chin, half-length turned to left gazing at spectator. Her pale brown hair is dressed on top with a centre parting, a single ringlet falling on her right shoulder. She wears a grey satin wrap-over gown low neckline with modesty-frilled white chemise. Daughter of Sir Edward Phelips III (1638-1699) and Edith Blake his second wife; Elizabeth married Edward Phelips IV (1678-1734) as his 2nd wife. Elizabeth Phelips and her son, Edward Phelips V (1725-1797), played an important role in the development of Montacute.
Provenance
On loan from the Phelips family since 1931; purchased with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the V&A Museums and Galleries Commission Purchase Grant Fund in 1989.
