Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Charlotte Delafield, Mrs Richard Phelips (1821-1905) by Sir Hubert von Herkomer, CVO, RA (Waal 1849 – Budleigh Salterton 1914), signed and dated 'HH 92'. A portrait of a mature woman, three-quarter length, turned to right, almost profile; her grey hair drawn severely back, a black ribbon at her neck. She is dressed in black with small white gauze cap, white gauze fischu and elaborate looped white gauze emerging from the sleeves of her dress at the elbows; she appears to be resting her left arm on a plinth; she holds the handle of a white ostrich feather fan in her right hand, the fingers of her left hand resting on the feathers. Companion picture to 597931.
Provenance
On loan from the Phelips family since 1931; purchased with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the V&A Museums and Galleries Commission Purchase Grant Fund in 1989.
