Oil painting on canvas, Captain Richard Phelips, MP (1825-1889) by Sir Hubert von Herkomer, CVO, RA (Waal 1849 – Budleigh Salterton 1914), signed and dated 'HH 93 posthumous'. A portrait of an elderly man, three-quarter length, seated in profile to left, in a padded (leather?) chair, holding a paper in both hands. He has short grey hair, moustache and trimmed beard and wears a dark/black jacket, white shirt collar and cuffs showing. Brown interior background. Companion picture to 597932.
Provenance
On loan from the Phelips family since 1931; purchased with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the V&A Museums and Galleries Commission Purchase Grant Fund in 1989.
