Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Reverend William Phelips (1755-1806) by Thomas Beach (Milton Abbas 1738 – Dorchester 1806), circa 1780-85. A portrait of a young man, head and shoulders facing, wearing black clerical dress, black coat and waistcoat, white stock tucked into waistcoat and powdered wig. The 2nd son of Edward Phelips V (1725-1797) and Maria Wright (1730-1793); married Anna Paget (1757/8-1816) in 1781. He was Vicar of Yeovil and inherited Montacute on the death of his father Edward Phelips V in 1797, as his elder brother, Edward Phelips VI (1753-1792) had died childless. William’s wife was the daughter of the Vicar of Doulting, Somerset. Three of his seven sons took Holy Orders and one daughter married a parson.
Provenance
On loan from the Phelips family since 1931; purchased with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the V&A Museums and Galleries Commission Purchase Grant Fund in 1989.
