Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Edward Phelips IV (1678-1734), attributed to Bartholomew Dandridge (London 1691 – London c.1754), inscribed Ed. Phelips. / 1730. A painted oval portrait of a middle-aged man with a double-chin, half-length, turned slightly to the right gazing at the spectator and wearing a powdered curled shoulder-length wig, gosling green velvet coat and waistcoat, white stock. Son of John Phelips (1644-1701) of Kilpatrick Co. Cork and London and Alice Molyeux; married (i) his cousin Anne Phelips (1687-1707) and (ii) her sister Elizabeth Phelips (1689-1750), the daughters of Sir Edward Phelips (1638-1699) and Edith Blake. By marrying two of his uncle's three daughters in succession, he eventually achieved the re-integration of the ownership of Montacute. He was MP for Somerset 1772.
Provenance
On loan from the Phelips family since 1931; purchased with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the V&A Museums and Galleries Commission Purchase Grant Fund in 1989.
