Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Edward Tenison (1673-1735), Bishop of Ossory, attributed to John Vanderbank the younger (1694-1739), after Sir Godfrey Kneller, Bt (1646 - 1723). Incorrectly inscribed on the green tablecloth: Tenison/Ar: B.p Cant.(who was Thomas Tenison, Archbishop of Canterbury, Edward's cousin) A half-length portrait of a young man, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, in a powdered shoulder-length wig and wearing ecclesiastical robes consisting of white long-sleeved rochet and black chimere, with white bands his right hand rests on a book, possibly one of the two books that he edited ‘Columella’ or a book of sermons. Edward Tenison was educated at St Paul's School; BA, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, 1694; LL.B.Lambeth, 1697, DD, Lambeth 1714; prebendary of Canterbury, 1770; bishop of Ossory 1731-1735. A version of Kneller's portrait, dated 1720 belongs to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.
