Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Man with a Ship at Sea, attributed to Bartholomew Dandridge (London 1691 – London c.1754), circa 1730-35. A portrait of a mature man, a member of the Phelips or Napier families, three-quarter length, standing, turned slightly to left, gazing at spectator, on the left is a window through which is a view of the sea and a ship and cloudy sky. He wears a powdered shoulder-length wig, a brown velvet coat and white stock, his right hand is tucked into his coat and his left arm is resting on a pedestal on the right; the pedestal has a carving of a lion.
Provenance
On loan from the Phelips family since 1931; purchased with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the V&A Museums and Galleries Commission Purchase Grant Fund in 1989.
