Summary

Oil painting on canvas, Colonel Edward Phelips II (1613-1680) by Jacob Huysmans (Antwerp c.1630 – London 1696) with an inscription on plinth on left Ed. Phelips. 1663. A portrait of a mature man, three-quarter length in full armour, facing slightly to the right, gazing at spectator, his left hand resting on his helmet on a table on the right, his right arm leaning on a plinth, his right hand holds a baton which leans back in the crook of his arm. Full shoulder-length, frizzed grey wig, large lace jobot; large fringed curtain hangs to the right above his left hand, the table on which his helmet rests is covered with an elaborate gold embroidered cloth. Son of Sir Robert Phelips and Bridget Gorges; married Anne Pye, daughter of Sir Robert Pye. The composition is based on Van Dyck's portrait of Sir Edmund Verney (Private Collection).

Provenance

On loan from the Phelips family since 1931; purchased with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the V&A Museums and Galleries Commission Purchase Grant Fund in 1989.
