Full description
This work has been attributed to William Etty RA (York 1787 – York 1849) since at least 1909, but heavy overpainting has undermined any more recent analysis. According to a label on the back, it was painted in 1828 for "Mr Wells of Red ..." (probably the art collector and patron, William Wells 1768-1847, of Redleaf in Kent. Wells was a shipbuilder whose firm built ships for the East India Company and Royal Navy). A second label records that it was lent by Frank Green in 1910 to an exhibition of work by Etty at York Art Gallery.
Provenance
According to label on the back, 'Painted in 1828 for Mr Wells of Red ....': probably the art collector and patron, William Wells 1768-1847, of Redleaf in Kent. Wells was a shipbuilder whose firm built ships for the East India Company and Royal Navy. Paiting acquired by Frank Green at some time before it appears on a 1909 inventory of the contents of Treasurer's House. Gift of Francis 'Frank' William Green FSA (1861-1954) to National Trust in 1930 as part of contents of Treasurer's House. Originally hung in South Dressing Room; West Sitting Room 1930-63; South Dressing Room 1963-90; West Sitting Room 1991 to date.
