Summary
Thirty hour, striking longcase clock in oak case, by James Trugard, Plymouth Dock (Devonport), circa 1750. 2-train, brass posted-frame construction movement with anchor escapement and count-wheel hour-striking on bell. 11” (27.5cms) square brass dial with mask and scroll spandrels and a coarsely matted dial centre. Roman hour numerals, fleur-de-lis half hour markers and arabic five-minute figures on the plain brass chapter ring. In the dial centre is a seconds dial, below XII o’clock, engraved with arabic five seconds figures. Above VI is a square calendar aperture and an oval brass signature plate, engraved: “Jas Trugard / Plymouth dock”. Pierced blued steel hands. The plain oak case has a flat top hood with plain oak columns to the sides, a shaped top to the trunk door, canted front edges to the trunk, and a square panelled base with heavily canted front edges and low bracket feet. The clock is currently being driven with a modern, lighter lead weight, to reduce the wear on the movement.
