Summary
Bottle or flask, porcelain, of elegant pyriform or pear-shape with elongated neck, probably made in the Arita kilns, Japan, c. 1650-1699; decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, painted around the rim with angular leaf motifs, above Kraak-style jewelled panels around the neck, the body with an abstract design of grapes, leaves and curled vine.
Full description
The bottle is perhaps for sake and the shape and design on the neck suggest the influence of late Ming Kraak ware bottles made around 1600-1620.
Provenance
Gift from Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan 3rd Bt
