Summary
Large dish, porcelain, of saucer shape, made in Zhangzhou ("Swatow ware"), Fujian province, China, 1580-1630; decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, painted in the centre with a pheasant of phoenix perched on a leafy branch of flowering peonies, the cavetto with shaped cartouches enclosing stylised blossoms in reserve on a geometric ground. The reverse is decorated with stylised floral sprigs.
