Summary
Dish, porcelain, saucer shape, made in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province, China, c. 1735-1750; decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron-red enamels and gold (Chinese Imari style), painted with a central scene of a vase, books, an incense burner, beside an artemisia leaf, surrounded by peony and lotus, double gourds and buddhist hand citrons in a bowl of a ladle, the rim with a diaper band with sprigs; the underside with some coarse sprays.
Full description
A paper label on the reverse is inscribed 'Lucknow 1859', evidence that the dish was acquired in India by Sir Charles Trevelyan, who was a civil servant, who collected looted ceramics and other ceramics following the Siege of Lucknow in 1859.
