Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Isabella Anne Hutchinson, Mrs Jens Wolff (?1771-1829) by Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA, Bristol 1769 – London 1830), circa 1803. An oval bust-length portrait of Isabella Anne, third daughter of Norton Hutchingson, of Woodhall Park, Hertforshire. She married Jens Wolff of Sherwood Lodge Battersea, who was Danish Consul in London in 1792. They separated in 1810. A close friend of Lawrence, Miss Elizabeth Croft refers to a large portrait exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1815 and now in the Art Insitute of Chicago, as having been started in 1803 and to the present oil sketch probably having been painted at the same time as the original sittings for it. She also sat in for the hands and drapery. She was rumoured to have been Lawrence's lover and that Hermann was their son.
Provenance
Perhaps lot 210, 'Mrs Wolff' in the Pall Mall Gallery sale, Christie's 19 March 1838, bough in at 31 guineas (too low for full-length original); Archibald Keightley (Lawrence's executor); his younger daughter, Miss Mary Keightley, her sale at Christie's sale 28 June 1935, lot 83, bought in; presented by her and her nephew, Sir Sydney Nicholson, 1943 to Major O.G.S. Croft (1880 - 1956); bequeathed by his widow Stella Isabel Bouwer, Mrs Owen Croft (b.c.1885 - 1972)
