Summary
Oil painting on panel, 'The Prayer' (La prière), after Jean-Bapiste Greuze (Tournus 1725 – Paris 1805), 19th-century; weak copy of a composition by Greuze. A head and shoulders portrait of a young girl in prayer. She is looking up to the left with hands clasped together. She is wearing a white dress with a blue shawl over her arms. She has dark hair. In small, wide, ornate gilt wooden frame with escutcheon and braiding detail, hanging from chains. Purchased by Henry Spencer Lucy at the sale of Reverend J. Lucy, 1875 for £54.12s 0d; bought in at Christie's, 1st June 1945, lot 29: £45; on loan from Sir Edmund Fairfax-Lucy (b. 1949)
