Summary
Pen and ink and oil painting on prepared gesso panel (grisaille), The Dutch Fleet by Heerman Witmont (c.1605- after 1683), signed on spar bottom right: WITMONT and inscribed on stern of lower half vessel: (?) [J]AN ….1673. Dutch Men-of-War in line off the coast, with rocks, tower and figures. A finely detailed pen drawing in black indian ink on panel first prepared with white ground. A grisaille painting which almost gives the appearance of being a conscious imitation of an engraving. Broad black frame.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
