Summary
Oil painting on panel, Recruiting Scene, in a Landscape Setting, by British (English) School, 18th century. Landscape, with rocky hillside on left, with gnarled tree in foreground, in the centre a press gang, consisting of three officers on the left with cockades in their hats and wearing military uniforms, with a dog in front all turned to the right, a yokel who is apparently being recruited on the right of them, with his hand outstretched about to shake the hand of one of the officers, to the right, an inn, with an inn sign, the innkeeper’s wife standing on the right, turned to the left, holds out a tankard in her right hand. Distant view in the centre with a hill.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
