Summary
Oil painting on panel, Cupid Disarmed in the manner of William Etty RA (York 1787 – York 1849). Nude young female, Venus, full-length, standing, facing, upper body bent to the right, leaning on a stone balustrade on her left arm and holding Cupid’s arrow in her right hand, out of his reach, above her head. Cupid, naked, with wings and a quiver strung across his chest, stands on the left of Venus, on his left leg, stretching up with both his arms, landscape setting. The balustrade on which Venus leans is covered with a white and red drape.
Provenance
C.W.Bowden, associated; date of acquisition by Lord Fairhaven is unknown; bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
