Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Classical Landscape with Lake, Castle and Figures, after Richard Wilson, RA (Penegoes 1714 – Mold 1782). A landscape with a river on the right in a fork in the river a large tree-covered boulder, on which perches a castle, in the foreground on the right on a stony bank are four figures, two standing the one on the right wears a helmet and has armour showing on his sleeve, brown buckskin tights and black boots, by his side is a figure in a red jacket and skin-coloured tights with boots, and a plume in his/her white bonnet, facing them on the right is a woman seated on a rock with a baby in her arms. On the right foreground is a large circular boulder and two tall trees, one a silver birch, on the far side of the river the embankment is tree lined and in the distance the river winds to a mountain; large white clouds in the (dusky) sky. This painting derives from a number of compositions known as ‘On the Arno’ by Richard Wilson, one of which is at Petworth (NT 486176) and anothewr at Tyntesfield (NT 20943).
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
