Oil painting on canvas, A Bacchante and a Young Faun dancing in a Bacchic Setting by William Etty RA (York 1787 – York 1849), 1838 A Bacchanalian scene: in the foreground, a nymph, on the left, dancing with a tambourine, and a young faun on the right dancing with cymbals, a classical temple, right background, three figures in the middle distance on the right, pouring wine and drinking; bottom right, a golden ewer and dish.
Provenance
John Windlass or W.J.Foot; Anonymous sale, Christie’s 27th January 1912, lot 29, bought Howard; With Knoedler 1912; Hon. Sir Evan Charteris; date of acquisition by Lord Fairhaven is unknown; bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
