Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Europa and the Powers by Victor Hume Moody (Clapham 1896 – Malvern 1990). Three nude figures, centre figure back view and seated holding fire in right hand. Nude female seated left, youth right with skull in left hand. Three figures in a landscape, on the left beneath a gnarled tree-trunk is a naked woman, with long blonde hair, wearing a diadem, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, her right foot raised on a stone, her right arm raised lifting a veil which falls down her right side, her left arm rests on the right shoulder of a naked man, seated on a blue cloth, with his back to the spectator, long hair, his right hand raised with flames coming out of the palm of his hand, he is looking at the figure of a young naked man holding a wand or staff in his right hand and a scull in his left, in front of him is a three-headed dog, at the bottom left of the picture is a lyre and an amphora; between the two male figures is a distant landscape with a cloudy sky above.Inscribed on back 'Prepared by Robertson and Co, London'.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
