Caption
These two large-scale decorative paintings are rare survivals, outside the locations for which they were intended, of Belin de Fontenay’s ambitious schemes. The type of composition is derived from the much smaller-scale Netherlandish prototypes, here transformed into Baroque extravaganzas. Belin de Fontenay was a pupil of the leading flower painter of his time, Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer (1636-1699), from whom he received work for châteaux and various public buildings. He soon obtained the favour of the court, especially of Louis XIV, and received commissions for Versailles. Some of his work is on a more ambitious scale than that of Monnoyer, which suited the grander settings of French palaces, whereas Monnoyer worked mostly on a more intimate scale suited to the British town and country houses, for which he later worked.
