Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Man tying his Sandal by William Etty RA (York 1787 – York 1849). A bearded male nude, full-length, bending down, turned to the right, looking away, his left foot raised on a stand, his left arm resting on his left knee and his right hand holding two straps or ribbons, in the pose of trying his sandal (no sandal visible) a leopard skin, draped over his left thigh, serving as a modesty covering, behind him on the floor is a shield on which is resting a sword and scabbard; cloudy sky above.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
