Summary
Oil painting on panel, Called 'Bungey', the Favourite Dog of Sir John Harington (1561-1612), British (English) School, formerly believed to be painted around 1608, now dated to circa 1800. A dog of nondescript breed or part spaniel, pale brown with white front and paws and with clipped hind-quarters, sitting, facing to the left. Background neutral grey. Label on frame 'Bungey. The favourite dog of Sir John Harrington, 1561-1612, godson of Queen Elizabeth.
Provenance
Sold Sotheby's 29 July 1942, lot 85, bought by 1st Lord Fairhaven; bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.

Marks and inscriptions
Recto: Inscribed gilt label attached to bottom of frame:Bungey. The favourite dog of Sir John Harington, 1561-1612, godson of Queen Elizabeth. In a letter addressed to Prince Henry in 1608, Sir John refers to many trips made by this dog, between Bath and Greenwich, bearing communications to or from the court."
