Summary
Oil painting on panel, Saint Louis of Anjou, Bishop of Toulouse (1274-1297), manner of Vincenzo Foppa (Bagnolo, near Brescia c.1427 – Brescia c.1515). A half-length portrait of a saint turned slightly to the right, wearing a Franciscan habit, cloak and mitre. Against blue sky background. Inscribed - Portrait of a Bishop Cellini (written in black ink on paper label pasted on back), also biographical details written on back.
Provenance
Owned by Sir Arthur Paul Benthall (1902 – 1992). Recorded on page 32 of the Sotheby's Inventory and Valuation of Benthall Hall dated July 1992. Accepted in lieu of tax by HM Government in March 1993 following the death of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall in 1992 and allocated to The National Trust for display at Benthall Hall.
