Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Francis Legh (1686-1737), British (English) School, dated on paper beside dividers:1724. A three-quarter length portrait of a middle-aged man, turned to the right, head almost facing, gazing at the spectator. Wearing a powdered wig, with claret collarless jacket and white shirt with neckcloth. Standing in front of a balustrade to the right, in his ringed right hand he holds a partially unfuled navigation chart for 'Margate Sands' (?), his left hand raised and pointing to a sailing ship of the fleet with a red flag. On his left, a table with containers of quills, compass and folded piece of paper. This version generally has greater detail and is larger than the 2nd version. This version has additional information painted onto the navigation chart; is dated on the left on the corner of the folder paper "1724"; the ship is larger; near to the rigging of the ship, upper left
