Oil painting on canvas, Joseph Watson (1648-1752), Park Keeper at Lyme by John Slack (fl.1750), signed and dated bottom right: Jo: Slack pinxit / 1750 and inscribed on paper on bottom right corner: Io Wattson, who/ in the 26th year of his Age/ Anno 1674, commences Keeper of/ Lime Park : In wch: Service he continued. 70 years/and Anno 1750. In the 102th year of his Age;/He hunted a Buck a chase near six hours long/at wch Hunting are Gentleman was present/with whose Ancestors he had Hunted with, for/ four Genatores before He being the fiveth/Generation he had hunted with. Jo n: Sluck; pinxit 1750. A full-length portrait of an elderly man standing, tutrned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, with grey balding hair, wearing a dark green thigh-length jacket and breeches with white shirt and neckcloth, thigh-boots with spurs; leather belt hanger with sheath for short sword. He holds out a blood covered dagger in his right hand, the left grips a sword at his hip. The head shoulders and front paws of a large brown and white dog are visible at right. A stag lies to the left with its throat cut. Hilly landscape with a hunt taking place in the background, a tree on the right, and distant view with reddish cloudy sky.
