Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Grey Stallion and Attendant by The Master J.H. (fl.1647-1666). The large figure of a saddled white stallion with a blue saddle with ornate gilt decoration and blue tassels, dominates the composition. It is led to the left by an attendant, or possibly its owner, who has shoulder length natural brown curly hair, and a moustache wears a black cap, thigh-length blue coat, white cravat, yellow waist-sash, white stockings and brown leather boots. In his right hand he holds a stick/whip and the left holds the bridle. On the left and at his side is a brown dog which turns to look up at him; in the distance top left a building which represent the Cage of Lyme before it was rebuilt by Leoni. The group is walking in front of a raised balustraded terrace.
Provenance
Original to the house. Listed in 1879 inventory as representing 'Richard Legh (with white horse as page to Charles II)' although this has been discounted due to the date when the picture was painted.
