Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Martha Stonehouse, Mrs Arthur Vansittart (d.1782) by Jonathan Richardson the elder (1665-1745). Full-length portrait of a woman, standing, turned slightly to right, facing, gazing at the spectator, with long dark brown hair, wearing a blue silk gown with low neckline, front fastening left open, revealing a white chemise and three-quarter-length sleeves with decorative edge, a blue/green cloak draped around her. Her right hand at her bosom holding a lace handkerchief, a wreath of pink flowers (roses ?) round the wrist of her extended left arm. Set in a landscape with an orange tree in a large urn to left.
