Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Elizabeth Legh, Lady Master (1666-1714), British (English) School, 1700-15. A painted oval half-length portrait of a young woman, turned to the right with head facing slightly inclined to the left, gazing at the spectator, brown curled hair, with a ringlet falling over her right shoulder. She is wearing a white chemise with frilled bow neckline draped off the shoulder, round her right arm is a string of pearls and a silk shawl of green with a buff lining is draped around her left shoulder. Daughter of Richard Legh, wife of Sir Strynsham Master whom she married in 1690.
Provenance
This portrait of Elizabeth Legh has remained with the Legh family and was loaned to the Lyme Hall by 4th Lord Newton in 1948. In the inventory of 1879, one of the portraits in the Long Gallery was recorded as 'Lady Masters'.
