Summary
Oil painting on panel, Called Elizabeth Noel, Countess of Castlehaven (c.1590 - after 1644), British (English) School, early 17th century. A half-length portrait, her right hand held to her breast.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust by the Misses Winifred and Marion Sedgwick in 1944 - 50, having presumably been acquired or inherited by their mother, who became the tenant of Grantham House in 1884, and inherited it from her brother in 1924.
Marks and inscriptions
On canvas, top right: quarterly, 1 & 4: ermine, a cherron gules; 2 & 3: gules, a fret, or; under a countess's coronet, and with mantling. On a torn and damaged label stuck to the back of the panel: Quarterly, [1st] & 4th. erm a chevron gu / Touchet / [2nd & 3rd gules] a fret or - Audley / [---------] married the heiress / [-----------] 1614 / [----------------] haven
