Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Princess Louise Hollandine, Princess Palatine, Abbess of Maubuisson, Pontoise (1622–1709) by Gerard van Honthorst (1590-1656), signed and dated "G.Honthorst 1650," GH in monogram. A half-length portrait, profile to left, head facing, her right hand held forward holding a transparent veil which covers her shoulders, wearing a scarlet dress with amber coloured sleeves, pearl necklace and pearls in her hair.
Provenance
Combe Abbey, no. 365 as 'Princess Palatine in red dress, Honthorst' (but 1866 catalogue, no. 365 became 'David playing on his Harp'); Acquired at the auction of the Craven Collection at Sotheby's in 1968. Accepted by HM Government in lieu of inheritance tax and allocated to the National Trust for display at Ashdown House, 1968.
