Oil painting on panel (oval), Amelie Elisabeth von Hanau - Münzeberg (1602 - 1651), widowed Langravine of Hesse-Cassel, by Gerrit van Honthorst (1590-1656), signed: G.Honthorst 164?0, and inscribed: Lady Craven of London. A head-and-shoulders portrait of an elderly woman to left, wearing a black dress and widow's cap and white lace fichu, touching a pearl at her bosom with her right hand.
Provenance
Acquired at the auction of the Craven Collection at Sotheby's in 1968. Accepted by HM Government in lieu of inheritance tax and allocated to the National Trust for display at Ashdown House, 1968.
