Summary
Pastel on paper, Mrs Elizabeth Purser (1728/9-1814) by George Chase (fl. London - 1811). A half-length portrait, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a white bonnet. Housekeeper at Petworth 1754-1814. Inscription on frame label:' Mrs Elizabeth Purser died 20 May 1814 aged 85 years, the last Sixty of which she passed in this room first as Housekeeper's maid and then as Housekeeper. Painted in her 83rd year'.
Provenance
Painted in 1811 and inherited until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72) arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by HM Treasury
