Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Battle Scene by Sebastian Vrancx (Antwerp 1573 - Antwerp 1647), signed on the left-hand pannier of the horse seen from behind on the left, held by a man: S V (in monogram). A battle scene probably from the Turkish-Hungarian conflict of the 17th century with the Turkish troops in the foreground, squares of cavalry and ordnance arrayed, with transport wagons and pikemen filling the plain in the centre mid-distance. The artist, chiefly known for his military scenes, was a captain in the Antwerp Civic Guard and a member of the Guild of Fencers.
Provenance
In the collection of the 3rd Earl of Egremont (1751-1837) in 1835; thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72) arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by HM Treasury.
