Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sibyl Montgomery, Marchioness of Queensberry (1845 -1935) in her 61st year, by Sholto Johnstone Douglas (1871-1958), 1905. An oval framed half-length portrait, turned to the left, profile, wearing a grey/white high neck blouse with a pendant on a chain.The artist was a distant cousin of the Marquess, whose son Alfred 'Bosie' Douglas was famously friends with Oscar Wilde and who helped with the latter's bail (as well as downfall). Sheila Colman, a local sheep farmer in Sussex, who bequeathed this portrait to the Egremonts in 2001 was the literary executor for Alfred Douglas after his death in 1945 and the death of her husband in 1988.
