Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Archangel Michael leaving Adam and Eve, after having conducted them out of Paradise by Thomas Phillips, RA (Dudley 1770 – London 1845), 1816. Three full-length figures, Adam left, kneels on his left knee, and clasps Eve who sits in front of him with her left arm over his knee and her right hand covering her face. Michael on the right in 'Roman' dress, wearing a plumed helmet and a spear and shield in his left hand, rises upwards, looking down on Adam and Eve and with his right arm pointing to heaven in a setting of apocalyptic clouds. "...High in front advanc'd, The brandish's sword of God before them blaz'd, Fierce as a comet; ..... whereat In either hand the hastening Angel caught Our lingering Parents, and to th' eastern gate Led them direct; and down the cliff as fast To the subjected plain; then disappeared, ...............................gliding meteorous." Milton, Paradise Lost
