Caption
According to the inscription on this portrait, the sitter was Elizabeth Ambrose, wife of the London merchant Jonathan Ambrose, and the mother-in-law of William II Blathwayt (1688–1742). Her daughter Thomasine married William in 1718.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Possibly Elizabeth, Mrs Jonathan Ambrose, English School, circa 1715-20, inscribed with the name of the sitter. The three-quarter-length, seated portrait is thought to show Elizabeth, wife of Jonathan Ambrose, mother of Thomasine Ambrose, and mother-in-law of William II Blathwayt. She is shown in a blue dress with a white lining, resting her left hand on her lap, and her right elbow on a marble-topped stand to the left, over which is draped a red curtain.

Indigenous collection purchased by Ministry of Works in 1956 and given to Dyrham Park in 1961
