Summary
Chinese mirror painting, probably mid eighteenth century, depicting figures in a garden on the edge of a lake or waterway, with various buildings visible on the far side. The scene in the foreground seems to be an allegory of love and the pain of separation, contrasting the lone, pensive female figure on the right with the intimate couple on the left and the pairs of birds on the ground and in the air. The painting is similar in style and composition to a Chinese mirror painting at Dyrham Park (NT 458428) and to a mirror painting in the Child collection at Osterley Park (NT 771801). Gilt cavetto frame with Persian leaf moulding and cable moulding.
Provenance
Transferred from Stourhead to Dyrham Park. Returned to Stourhead House in December 2017.
