Caption
This portrait is inscribed, probably at a later date, with the name of the sitter. There are two coats of arms to the top left – the first belonging to her own family, the Mockels of Westphalia. Her lavish dress serves to demonstrate the wealth and status of her family. She also wears jewellery, including a pearl necklace and a gold chain, to which is attached a medallion portrait, possibly of Frederick Henry of Orange Nassau. It is possible that another artist painted the flowers. Since none of them is blown, it seems unlikely that they were added as a symbol of mortality. This picture is paired with a portrait of a younger brother, who, as yet, has not been named.

A label on the back states that the picture, painted by Albert Cuyp, was 'bought April 1894 of Mr. Cahn belonged to Mr. Bruce'; Hon. W. Lowther sale, Christie's, 10 May 1912, lot 9, as by J.G. Cuyp; bought by Davis with its pair; bought by 1st Lord Bearsted before 1919 (it is possible that [Charles] Davis was acting for him in 1912); given with Upton House to the National Trust by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted (1882 – 1948), in 1948, shortly before his death
