Wooton is usually associated with equestrian portraits set in landscapes, but he also produced landscapes, such as this one, throughout his life. It is uncertain whether he ever visited Rome, but he was greatly influenced by Poussin. The sale of his studio in 1761 included eleven copies after the French master.
