Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Isaac Welman, by Joseph Highmore (London 1692 – Canterbury 1780), signed and datred Jos. Highmore pin 1737, also inscribed: Isaac Welman Esquire. A half-length portrait of a young man, body facing, head turned half left, wearing a dark brown coat with gold frogging, scarlet waistcoat with gold braid, white lace cravat and cuffs; his right hand resting on a volume of Pope's WORKS on a table.

In the family possession until P. Welman sale, Christie's, 4 March 1927, lot 133: bought by Colnaghi; included in two anonymous sales at Christie's, 10 May 1935, lot 30: bought by Chance; 20 December 1935, lot 140: bought by Ellis and Smith; bought by Lord Bearsted before February 1937; given with Upton House to the National Trust by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted (1882 – 1948) shortly before his death, in 1948
