Summary
Terracotta, 'Spice' on hind legs, Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm RA (1834-90), 1871, inscribed on base, proper right ‘1871 BOEHM fecit’. A life-size terracotta model of ‘Spice’, a rough coated terrier owned by Adelbert Brownlow Cut, 3rd Earl Brownlow (1844-1921) and his wife Adelaide (1844/5-1917).
Full description
Spice is depicted on hind legs looking up, waiting intently for a treat. The model, inscribed ‘1871 BOEHM fecit’, was probably commissioned from the sculptor at the same time as a bronze group of Adelbert with Queen Bess, the 3rd Earl’s favourite hunter, also signed and dated 1871 (NT 435418).
